An Honest Look at State of the Magazine Industry — Summer 2017 – posted 8/3/17
Freeport Press promoted a 7-question survey to a variety of magazine readers in the North America – demographics chart below. The survey was open for 3 days in August 2016 and generated 692 responses. 600 responses were solicited through Survey Monkey. The rest were in response to a promotion to the Freeport Press Newsletter audience.
When it comes to our magazines, we read more, read longer and subscribe more often to print than digital.
While publishers talk about embracing the digital futures of their publications, ordinary people like you and me still prefer to read a good glossy.
These findings come out of an informal survey we conducted of several hundred North American consumers. We asked seven key questions about the type, subscriptions and time with magazines they had read in the past month, to see if we could draw any conclusions.
The results were clear: People are more engaged with their print magazines than their digital ones.
Some key findings:
As an aside, we left space for people to jot down their own comments, it was not a required field. What we found was telling. 447 of the 692 respondents took the time to note their preference. Instead of us picking and choosing the comments that promote print we decided to list them in their entirety below. It’s a long list – we’ll let you draw your own conclusions.
To be sure, our survey was not meant to be a scientifically thorough bit of research, but through it we hoped to better understand today’s readers and what they like. We believe, for magazines, the value of print stands strong.
“Any thoughts on the magazines? Prefer print? Like digital?”
I prefer print although there is the point of not having to recycle print magazines.

Prefer digital.
8/26/2016 7:22 PM
Digit probably have their advantages, but I still prefer print as it is currently more convenient to read in bed or outside. Also because I do not yet own a device, such as a tablet, on which I would want to read a digit magazine.
8/26/2016 7:06 PM
I have a subscription to Consumer Reports and have over 20 years of issues for reference. I read a number of online magazines but don’t expect to be able to find articles more than a year old without extensive searching. It is a matter of accessibility.
8/26/2016 7:04 PM
I like the ease of digital, but I’m not so keen on all the advertising pop-ups. I hate the clutter of print magazines, so I only subscribe to those I can share with others.
8/26/2016 7:04 PM
Prefer print. More attractive to look at. More detail in pictures. No computer crashes. No passwords!!! Less privacy abuses i.e. someone tracking what articles I read. Magazines have ads, but less profiling of me.

8/26/2016 12:56 PM
I prefer digital as it creates less clutter in my home
8/26/2016 12:55 PM
Digital is easier because i have them all on my kindle. They dont take up any space and they don’t get damaged like prints do.
8/26/2016 12:54 PM
digital is preferred
8/26/2016 12:52 PM
I like magazines. Prefer print. Don’t like digital.
8/26/2016 12:51 PM
I just do what is easiest. I don’t pay for any of the digital magazines, they are free within apps I use. I know that doesn’t help the magazines as much but they are getting money from the ads embedded. I have a lower income working for a nonprofit, so free newspaper articles, magazines, blogs, op ed pieces, etc is basically where I get all of my news and current events.
8/26/2016 12:49 PM
Depends. If it’s something with recipes, I’d prefer print. If it’s a one and done type thing, digital.
8/26/2016 12:49 PM
I prefer print. I don’t want to spend anymore time staring at a computer/phone screen than I have to.

8/26/2016 12:17 PM
Not really a magazine guy put I’d prefer print. Easier to navigate. Downside is that it takes up space and you need to remember where you left it, as opposed to just searching it on your computer.

8/26/2016 11:13 AM
I prefer to hold and read magazines. Plus i dont have wifi

8/26/2016 10:23 AM
I much prefer print. I have a collection of custom car magazines, specializing in digest-size.
8/26/2016 10:21 AM
Both have merit. Like the ability to read on the iPad I carry for work without added weight of paper reading materials
8/26/2016 10:15 AM
I’m an older woman who grew up loving reading. I will ALWAYS prefer to have the written word in my hands.
8/26/2016 10:12 AM
Like print, digital is more convenient
8/26/2016 10:12 AM
I like print just because I commute via mass transit and it’s easier to have a magazine than carry all the electronics I have and my daily necessities. Electronics are heavy
8/26/2016 10:01 AM
I still like to read printed materials versus the internet.

I like both. Digital is convenient to read on phone, but I still like holding the physical copy.
8/26/2016 8:32 AM
I have had subscriptions to Print Magazines and actually prefer to read print magazines. The issue for me is time. If I have time, I enjoy print magazines, this mostly happens in the winter months when it gets darker earlier. I only read digital magazines for a specific article not cover to cover like a print magazine.

8/26/2016 7:45 AM
Print magazines are such a waste of paper. We have a habit of sharing our subscriptions after we are done with them. Local schools enjoyed getting them for projects, but it just seems horrible waste

Reading from a computer bothers my eyes after a short time. I also prefer to hold a book or magazine, check out side articles & photos… flip back and forth at will. Digital information is new to my generation so it takes a tad getting used to.
8/26/2016 6:03 AM

8/26/2016 5:44 AM
Digital is pretty much updated
8/26/2016 5:38 AM

8/26/2016 5:38 AM
Prefer hard copies.
8/26/2016 4:44 AM
If its digital, stop calling it a magazine. It might still be technically, but your attaching an archaic word to your product, and trying to pitch it to a modern reader, I am bored before I even start reading.

Old-school print version all the way
8/25/2016 8:07 PM
8/25/2016 8:05 PM
I love print magazines, but the problem is that they take too much space and I don’t have enough time to finish reading one before the other gets mailed to me. But I really do enjoy them.
8/25/2016 8:03 PM
8/25/2016 8:02 PM
I like print magazines. I have to be on the computer for work and don’t want to deal with them on my free time. FYI- the choices are not showing on your questions. I answers as if the lowest answer was the smallest number and the top the largest.
8/25/2016 8:02 PM
I like print better. Its good to pick something up and read it. Its good for the eyes.
8/25/2016 8:02 PM
I think digital’s are rip off’s. They are only slightly less money than the print version of it and the satisfaction of your purchase isn’t there with a digital magazine.
8/25/2016 8:00 PM
printed.
8/25/2016 7:58 PM
Prefer print.
8/25/2016 7:50 PM
digital
8/25/2016 7:50 PM
Like formats that work well on smart phones
8/25/2016 7:48 PM
Sometimes it is nice to have print as I work online and am on the computer every day.
8/25/2016 7:45 PM
As with books, I prefer to have a tangible copy in hand.
8/25/2016 7:44 PM
8/25/2016 7:31 PM
Prefer print giving me eyes a break from the computer
8/25/2016 7:30 PM
I prefer a hard copy. So print magazines.
8/25/2016 7:23 PM
8/25/2016 7:18 PM
I read print magazines
8/25/2016 7:08 PM
Prefer print, except for the expense and the recycling issues
8/25/2016 6:56 PM
The same. The more images though I like to see in print.
8/25/2016 6:52 PM
I like both
8/25/2016 6:47 PM
No
8/25/2016 6:45 PM
I prefer digital because it is more space efficient, easier to get a hold of, and I have a larger, on demand selection.
8/25/2016 6:45 PM
I amd not a smart phone person and do not spend much time on the internet. I use ASRT magazines to keep up my license/CEU’s. Other than that I only look at print magazines when they are lying around misc. places like waiting rooms.
8/25/2016 6:32 PM
In general I prefer reading print but a wider variety of digital is more accessible.
8/25/2016 6:28 PM
I am done with magazines. They bore me. I prefer to read books.
8/25/2016 6:27 PM
I like Print Magazines, I would rather read from paper than a digital screen
8/25/2016 6:25 PM
Print, always! I read a lot.
8/25/2016 6:22 PM
prefer digital like print
8/25/2016 6:09 PM
I really don’t see any value in magazines… Most of the articles are not of interest or not relevant to me.
8/25/2016 5:55 PM
Prefer print cause u can kero copies of intere sd t to refer to at a later date for home design ideas, places of interest to visit, restaurants etc.
8/25/2016 5:53 PM
I prefer print, it’s my time to relax and unplug.
8/25/2016 5:47 PM
The magazine I subscribe to has large, detailed pictures of maps that are easier to study on paper, rather than a screen.
8/25/2016 5:45 PM
8/25/2016 5:42 PM
Definitely prefer print. Less glare. More convenient.
8/25/2016 5:34 PM
When attempting digital something always happens and I can’t complete. I’ll stick with print.
8/25/2016 5:30 PM
I prefer digital saves the trees.
8/25/2016 5:29 PM
I prefer print over digital simply because I like to have a tangible product.
8/25/2016 5:25 PM
Prefer Print
8/25/2016 5:24 PM
I am open to either
8/25/2016 5:12 PM
Depends on the magazine. If I get it for the articles, I prefer digital. If I want it for the pictures or to clip articles, I prefer print.
8/25/2016 5:12 PM
I still prefer print magazines. Its something I read at random when I have a few spare moments, so its nice to have some laying around and easy to grab when I have a moment.
8/25/2016 5:10 PM
The only digital magazine I read is the Ikea catalogue. I like that I can click on the screen and have links to how to buy the products.
8/25/2016 5:06 PM
I prefer print, however because information is available online, I’m not willing to pay for print anymore. I used to subscribe to a bunch of print magazines but now that they’re freely available online there’s no use for them unless you are getting your nails done or going to the bathroom.
8/25/2016 5:04 PM
I gather magazines are rebounding. Print is entertainment; digital is an extension of the workday
8/25/2016 5:01 PM
Prefer print
8/25/2016 5:00 PM
It depends on the Magazine – probably prefer print
8/25/2016 4:55 PM
I prefer classic magazines that don’t try to look like an Internet web site. Also, I prefer writers who use multi-syllable words.
8/25/2016 4:47 PM
I prefer print. Image quality is usually better and my view of the page isn’t limited by screen size.
8/25/2016 4:45 PM
I definitely prefer printed magazines. If I had more free time, I would read them more frequently.
8/25/2016 4:44 PM

8/25/2016 4:43 PM

8/25/2016 4:43 PM

8/25/2016 4:32 PM
Prefer print if I want to keep it long term.
8/25/2016 4:31 PM
Prefer print, but would read digital
8/25/2016 4:31 PM
Prefer print
8/25/2016 4:30 PM
Digital would be better if pop up ads didn’t appear on every screen. It slows the whole thing down and is a big deterrent.
8/25/2016 4:24 PM
Print is easier to navigate, easier to read unless you have a big screen, and you don’t need power, internet, or computer/tablet/smartphone. Digital is easier to save and search content and takes up no space beyond the size of the device you’re carrying.
8/25/2016 4:18 PM
Prefer print because it’s easier to “go back” to if I am away from any technology.
8/25/2016 4:16 PM
Prefer print. Pure aesthetics of holding it in my hands with my finger behind the page.
8/25/2016 4:15 PM
Prefer print for most; like digital for some work-related pubs.
8/25/2016 4:11 PM
Prefer print
8/25/2016 4:09 PM
just like my books, I prefer print.
8/25/2016 4:08 PM

8/25/2016 4:04 PM
8/25/2016 4:00 PM
prefer print
8/25/2016 4:00 PM
I subscribe to the New Yorker and like getting a preview from the digital version but I get into it and really enjoy reading the print magazine.
8/25/2016 3:59 PM
none
8/25/2016 3:58 PM
8/25/2016 3:52 PM
Honestly, I don’t read any kind of magazines.
8/25/2016 3:48 PM
Do not vote for Hillary Clinton
8/25/2016 3:45 PM
Both have benefits.
8/25/2016 3:45 PM
I like both, it depends on what the magazine is about
8/25/2016 3:43 PM
Prefer print.
8/25/2016 3:40 PM
Prefer print, I’m old school, I like holding it
8/25/2016 3:39 PM
I like Oprah in digital, esp. convenient when traveling to have some magazine downloaded. Also read Harvard Bus Review in digital. The print mags are usually the cheap subscriptions that allow me to get a subscription for my mother free (BHG, Good Housekeeping). Had Money but let it lapse.
8/25/2016 3:38 PM
prefer print
8/25/2016 3:36 PM
Some of my magazines have on line versions but I enjoy the feel and flexibility I have with the print versions. Easier to mark a place and come back, dog-ear pages, tear out recipes, etc.
8/25/2016 3:32 PM
For books I prefer digital – for magazines I prefer print.
8/25/2016 3:27 PM
I am old school. I like to hold a magazine in my hands and turn the pages, cut out articles and tab pages for future reference. I even like the smell of some magazines (but not all).
8/25/2016 3:23 PM
I prefer print. It doesn’t run out of battery
8/25/2016 3:16 PM
I prefer print, but my opinion doesn’t matter because I’m not a millennial.
8/25/2016 3:04 PM
never even thought about online magazines!
8/25/2016 3:00 PM
i prefer print magazines
8/25/2016 2:59 PM
Prefer print so I can keep copies of articles/recipes without having to have my tablet or laptop
8/25/2016 2:54 PM
Wake up…has nothing to do with surveys like this. I sold print in trades for 40+ years. It’s all about advertising…as to print versus digital. Age of people…primarily ladies…deciding where advertising dollars go…are under 40 years. This isn’t going to change! Print loses…digital wins…and more good magazines go out of business…
8/25/2016 2:52 PM
I still prefer print magazines.
8/25/2016 2:45 PM
I prefer print, but understand that digital is better for the environment. Going forward, I will move subscriptions to digital. I wish there was a “digital only” option for most popular magazines.
8/25/2016 2:42 PM
Like to read in bed at night. Don’t want to bring a computer to bed.
8/25/2016 2:40 PM
I’m not really into magazines – print, digital or otherwise. Magazines are old school – like 1980’s.
8/25/2016 2:32 PM
8/25/2016 2:19 PM
Prefer having the magazine in my hands. I can pass a print magazine on to friends. Digital is OK.
8/25/2016 2:10 PM
Prefer print. Like holding it in my hands and not worrying about spilling liquid on it
8/25/2016 2:06 PM
Digital is more accessible
8/25/2016 2:05 PM
Very few magazines actually print anything worth reading.
8/25/2016 2:01 PM
prefer print 8-2
8/25/2016 1:54 PM
I like turning pages…holding the paper. Digital is cold.
8/25/2016 1:52 PM
I prefer digital for subscriptions, but print if I am sitting down just to read.
8/25/2016 1:42 PM
I prefer print. All of my magazines revolve around cooking and there are recipes to keep
8/25/2016 1:34 PM
Print is better-I want to feel, smell, and envelope myself in my reading material that I can sit down and pick up later. Mark pages.
8/25/2016 1:33 PM
prefer print
8/25/2016 1:32 PM
I prefer print.
8/25/2016 1:32 PM

8/25/2016 1:30 PM
Print rules!
8/25/2016 1:30 PM
Prefer print. Digital, to me, isn’t a magazine. It’s a transient batch of information. I appreciate the “permanence” of a printed product.
8/25/2016 1:29 PM
Prefer Print
8/25/2016 1:27 PM
I read digital books and newspapers but printed magazines.
8/25/2016 1:26 PM
Business – almost all digital News – digital / radio Leisure – Mostly Print
8/25/2016 1:18 PM
I like to read hard copies (print) way more because I’m usual distracted if I’m online and I don’t enjoy scrolling up and down.
8/25/2016 1:17 PM

8/25/2016 1:14 PM
I mostly read them in waiting rooms and am glad they are there. Even my Accountant has magazines!
8/25/2016 1:10 PM
Prefer print by far!
8/25/2016 1:02 PM
For me it depends on the content. For work related content, I prefer digital – especially when traveling. For food or leisure, I prefer print.

8/25/2016 12:56 PM
I like print as it is easier to read, helps me remember especially when go online to look at items of interest, and above all helps me retain important papers amongst the many printed books I have on hand.

8/25/2016 12:51 PM

8/25/2016 12:48 PM
Prefer print, of course.
8/25/2016 12:45 PM
I still enjoy holding the magazine or catalog and looking back a few pages and NOT WAITING FOR IT TO LOAD!

8/25/2016 12:43 PM
Both have a place in my lifestyle.
8/25/2016 12:32 PM
digital is easier to transport but there is something to actually turning a page
8/25/2016 12:32 PM
Print allows you to go slowly and look at each item whether it is an article or advertisement.
8/25/2016 12:31 PM
not a media of the future
8/25/2016 12:30 PM
Prefer printed material as I can read at my leisure.
8/25/2016 12:29 PM
I still like to have the paper in my hand. I have to read alot on the computer or tablet and paper is more enjoyable.
8/25/2016 12:28 PM
Digital news sources are much more convenient and often cheaper than print versions (though print magazines will hopefully always have a place in a doctor’s office).
8/25/2016 12:28 PM
prefer print
8/25/2016 12:26 PM
Prefer print, hands up!
8/25/2016 12:26 PM
I hate print because it creates so much trash
8/25/2016 12:22 PM
Depends on the content of the magazine.
8/25/2016 12:22 PM
Like print.
8/25/2016 12:15 PM
I prefer print, I like to have something tangible in my hands. There is something a little more peaceful about reading something in my hands versus, the digital which tires my eyes more quickly than print. Digital has a chaotic feel, making for a less enjoyable read. Thanks,
8/25/2016 12:13 PM
hate that they are mostly ads
8/25/2016 12:12 PM
Print – fun to receive in the mail. 1 for my son (National Geographic Kids) & 1 for me (Atlantic Weekly, a gift from NPR but I came to love it). I am 41.
8/25/2016 12:12 PM
prefer paper
8/25/2016 12:11 PM

8/25/2016 12:11 PM
Magazines are still relevant… As long as the content is good.

8/25/2016 12:07 PM
I prefer print. I only like reading short things digitally.
8/25/2016 12:03 PM
Print all the way, nothing like physically holding the pages and flipping through. Digital is too impersonal and cold.
8/25/2016 12:02 PM
both
8/25/2016 11:54 AM
Print magazine is easier to navigate. Digital has the advantage of going deeper into a story or article thanks to search options…
8/25/2016 11:54 AM
prefer print!
8/25/2016 11:54 AM
If it’s done correctly, digital can be great on tablets. But there will always be something about having it in your hands.
8/25/2016 11:52 AM
I like print, but the quality of paper has gotten so thin that it’s distracting.
8/25/2016 11:50 AM
I like print.
8/25/2016 11:49 AM
prefer print- obviously!
8/25/2016 11:49 AM
I prefer digital its easier to access and a little less messy
8/25/2016 11:48 AM
Digital is more convenient but I still prefer to hold a print magazine in my hands.
8/25/2016 11:48 AM
I prefer print magazines. flipping through pages is better than scrolling through a screen
8/25/2016 11:48 AM
I prefer print magazines. I spend most of my time on computers. It is nice to have a tangible magazine every now and then to look through.
8/25/2016 11:48 AM
Digital is great because it’s more accessible, and I don’t need to carry around the physical copy. The print copy does has it’s advantages. As I spend more time with it, and find myself flipping through the entire magazine. With digital I only look for the content that stands out to me and not the entire magazine.
8/25/2016 11:48 AM
8/25/2016 11:47 AM
If we include newsletters in the digital magazine category, I read a lot of those. Sometimes the lines are very blurred between newsletters and magazines…most newsletters are basically magazines that only dole out a few pages at a time, I think. Or just highlight the articles separately.
8/25/2016 11:47 AM
I prefer print but get overwhelmed by the clutter that it brings as I don’t want to throw them away. (I might want to use the images for a collage.)
8/25/2016 11:47 AM
PRINT!!!
8/25/2016 11:46 AM
I spend all day on a computer. I don’t want to have to read magazines on a screen, too. I want a break from technology and to hold a copy of the magazine in my hands, to turn down corners, to jot notes, and to tear out significant articles I want to keep.
8/25/2016 11:46 AM
Digital is more convenient because then I can read it at work but I like to read print magazine when I’m relaxing at home.
8/25/2016 11:44 AM
I prefer print… actually holding, feeling and reading is part of the experience.
8/25/2016 11:44 AM

8/25/2016 11:43 AM
I really enjoy print magazines.
8/25/2016 11:43 AM
I use a computer screen daily so it is nice to get away from the screens and use the paper version.
8/25/2016 11:42 AM
I like digital. I haven’t had the time lately to read for leisure other than looking at the covers in the check out lines.
8/25/2016 11:41 AM
Like both. Digital is more accessible. Always available on my phone
8/25/2016 11:41 AM
My time is limited. However, if I am reading a magazine, I don’t really have a preference. I enjoy them both. Print in a doctor’s office and digital on a plane!
8/25/2016 11:41 AM
Subscribed to digital magazine service once and never remembered to open up the app to download magazines.
8/25/2016 11:41 AM
Much prefer print – easy to refer back to.
8/25/2016 11:41 AM
I like the portability of print.
8/25/2016 11:40 AM
prefer print – and more important – so do the readers of my magazine. That’s why we print up our digital photos – or copies of our speeches – because print has more impact than digital
8/25/2016 11:40 AM
I definitely prefer print, because you can read them anywhere.
8/25/2016 11:33 AM

8/25/2016 11:32 AM
I prefer print magazines. If you include professional journalswn your definition of a print magazine, my answers are quite different. Are online blogs digital magazines?
8/25/2016 11:25 AM
I like to flip through the pages of the magazine and sometimes tear some pages out to keep. My magazine subscriptions usually always have perfume and beauty samples in them. I can’t get samples from digital issues of magazines. I also like to share my print magazines with my friends and family. We all pass them around and share. I can’t do that with the digital subscriptions.
8/25/2016 11:23 AM
I love print still!
