New Blooms for Your Font Garden this Week

It’s Friday, it’s the first week of March, and we are feeling spring in the air. Check out this week’s free fonts and see what starts to bloom in your designs.

Our first pick this week is Alegreya Sans from Heurta Tipográfica. It’s a more humanist san serif design than many modern fonts, with more organic, calligraphy-inspired horizontal movement for easy reading. The family set includes seven weights plus matching italics and small caps. You’ll find this is great for advanced typesetting in books and articles. Download from HT, and then grab the companion serif version from Font Squirrel.

Next we travel to South America and offer Montserrat, a Kickstarter-backed project from Julieta Ulanovsky. The contemporary yet classic design is inspired by early 20th-century signage in the Montserrat neighborhood of Buenos Aires. It’s been recently updated with extra weights (but no italics). The versatile, clean-lined font is a nice alternative to pricey typefaces like Proxima Nova, Gotham, and Avenir. Grab it on GitHub.

As always, we urge you to support the artists and foundries that make so many good fonts available. “Like” their work, donate if you wish, and keep coming back here for more Free Font Fridays.
