This Week’s Free Font is Grotesque

Let’s get to the first font ASAP.

No, really, this week’s first freebie is Asap, by Pablo Cosgaya and Ominbus-Type Foundry. This simple, rounded sans-serif design has a friendly, casual style. It includes three weights plus matching italics, and you can download yours from Behance.

Our next freebie falls into the grotesque type category, generally meaning it’s straight and uniform in structure, and not inspired by calligraphy.

“From today’s perspective, it may be surprising to know that these sans serifs were considered pretty renegade for their time,” writes M. Harding in CreativeMarket. “They were called ‘grotesque’ because they were seen as quite ugly and obnoxious compared to their more ornate predecessors — the Modern Serifs and Roman type styles. Basically, they were the punk to the serif as disco.”

So, we offer the sublime punk grotesqueness of Archivo Black, also from Omnibus-Type. This bold yet clear sans-serif makes a big impact, especially when you combine it with Archivo Regular. Download from Behance, and be sure to appreciate the project when you do.

We hope you’ve enjoyed all the free fonts that came your way this year. Make sure you sign up for the Freeport Press newsletter to keep getting our free font selections in 2018!
