Steel, Rust and a Great Vintage Song for Free Font Friday

When font names make us think of songs from the ‘80s, you know they’ll be making an appearance on Free Font Friday.

This week, we start with Norwester from designer Jamie Wilson, who claims to “question everything.” We don’t question the beauty of this font, however.  The condensed geometric san serif is striking in its straightforward bold look. It features small cap letters and an assortment of symbols. We can picture it on logos and other high-impact uses when you want a slightly vintage, industrial vibe (like maybe the side of a ship). Download for free from Font Squirrel. (If you like it, Jamie suggests making a donation to the International Justice Mission.)

To go along with the industrial vibe, we present Nexa Rust by the design team at Fontfabric. This family of five free fonts has a handmade, slightly imperfect style. It will add a rustic, textured quality to your design, and includes some fun extras (like a boat anchor). You’ll find the most versatile display typefaces of the five will be Sans Black and Slab Black Shadow. Download all five free from Fontfabric.

Now about that ‘80s song … enjoy!
